In Orthodox Spirituality, Fr. Dumitru Staniloae presents the “process of a Christian progress on the road to perfection in Christ, by the cleansing of the passions and the winning of the virtues, a process which takes place in a certain order. In other words, it describes the manner in which the Christian can go forward from the cleansing of one passion to the cleansing of another, and at the same time acquiring of the different virtues.”
Fr. Dumitru Staniloae was one of the most influential theologians of the 20th Century. Firmly grounded in the ascetic fathers, in particular St. Dionysios the Areopagite, St. Maximus the Confessor and St. Gregory Palamas, Fr. Dumitru was a pivotal part of the movement to free Orthodox Theology form a routine scholasticism and to raise spirituality up from sentimentality.
From the book: “..the Christian teaching of a Trinity of Persons in a unity of essence is the only one which can constitute the basis of a perfect spirituality for man, understood as a full communion with God in love, without his being lost in it.”
