The Kazan icon was discovered on July 8, 1579, in the city of Kazan, after the Theotokos herself revealed its location. The icon was credited with helping Russia to repel numerous invasions throughout its history. The feast of the icon is celebrated on July 8th and October 22nd (O.S.)
This is the main icon of the Theotokos on the Hermitage iconostasis and was painted by a monk at the Hermitage.
