This icon is sometimes called the Old Testament Trinity. It depicts the appearance to Abraham of three angels, understood by the Church as a representation of the Holy Trinity. Since the Trinity Itself cannot be directly depicted, the Church confesses and venerates this most exalted doctrine by the depiction of Abraham’s vision. The early Fathers understood one of the Angels to be Christ Himself, and thus the second Angel is shown wearing the garments of Christ.
